Water Filtration Process for Tap Water

Water filtration is the process of removing undesirable chemical compounds from water. This process can also remove biological contaminants also organic and inorganic materials from the water.

In this article, The Water Filter Warehouse will take you in a step-by-step process of water filtration for your tap water.

The Water Filtration Process

Most of the water used in industrialized countries like America is treated at water treatment plants. However, the methods those plants use in the pretreatment of the water depend on the size and the severity of the contaminated water. These practices have been standardized to make sure that there is regulatory compliance.

The raw water goes through pretreatment before even going through the filtration process. Biological contaminants, chemicals, and other materials are taken out of the water in this process. It is done firstly by screening the larger debris from the water.

Then the water passes through preconditioning, in which water with high mineral content is treated with sodium carbonate.

Then lastly, the prechlorination process, wherein chlorine is applied to raw water that may contain high concentrations of natural organic matter.

Once the water is pretreated, it will now go through the filtration process.

Coagulation and Flocculation

This is the first process of water filtration. Chemicals are added to the water for the dirt and dissolve particles to bind together, forming a larger particle called flor.

After most of the suspended particles have settled, the water enters the sedimentation basin. During this process, the floc is already heavy and falls and settles to the bottom of the water tank.

The clear water on top passes through sand gravel and charcoal filters to remove dissolved particles such as dust, parasites, bacteria, viruses, and chemicals.

Disinfection is the final step in water filtration. During which, harmful microbes, such as bacteria, viruses, and protozoa, are killed through the addition of disinfectant chemicals.

The main reason why water goes through filtration is to stop water-related illnesses and diseases. People with poor immune systems, infants, and the elderly are at risk of experiencing these diseases due to contaminated water from the tap.

Filtered water typically tastes and smells better than water that is not. Heavy metals play a part in the unpleasant taste and smell of tap water. Water filtration systems help remove these metals, improving both taste and smell.

Even though your tap water goes through filtration, the quality of your tap water can still be bad. For your family’s peace of mind, it is best to install water filtration systems in your home.
